Will Marvel's God of Mischief Hold His Own On Disney Plus?

He's back!!! Loki, Marvel's misguided antagonist and fan favorite, will now be a six-episode television series on Disney+ starting Wednesday, June 9, 2021. If you're not familiar with Loki, he was first introduced in 2011's Thor. He also appeared in five other films:

  • The Avengers (2012)
  • Thor: The Dark World (2013)
  • Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
  • Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
  • Avengers: Endgame (2019)

Loki is best known for fighting Thor and other heroes in the Marvel Universe, but to better understand Loki as a whole, let's revisit how his character came to be. Abandoned as a baby by his father Laufey, Loki was found and adopted by Thor's father, Asgardian King Odin and raised as an Asgardian prince. Being a great warrior wasn't Loki's strong suit, but sorcery was, all thanks to his adopted mother, Frigga. Misunderstood and overlooked, Loki became jealous of Thor and plotted to take over the throne, which he succeeded in doing. Having been lied to all his life, Loki quickly learns about his past and controls his destiny.

This new series is produced by Marvel Studios, with Waldron serving as head writer and Kate Herron directing. Tom Hiddleston continues his role as Loki, with Owen Wilson, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Sophia Di Martino, and Wunmi Mosaku as other cast members.

Will having Loki as the main character for an entire series be too much of a good thing for Disney Plus? While the series hasn't even started, a second season is already in the making.
