Why Do People Collect Toys?

Do you know what Tom Hanks, Angelina Jolie, and Leonardo DiCaprio all have in common? Other than being well-known actors, they are avid collectors. Tom collects typewriters. Angelina collects antique daggers and Leo collects action figures. If you are a collector, you are a person who collects things that capture your interest, professionally or as a hobby.

Ever walk into a room and see rows of action figures inside their boxes and ask yourself, "Why?" There's a particular joy in collecting toys like action figures. It's not just about being able to own something that you only dreamed of when you were a child. It's about getting that warm feeling of nostalgia after you got your hands on it.

Todd McFarlane, a comic book creator, artist, writer, filmmaker, and entrepreneur, says that when most people hear the word "toy," it conjures up images of children playing with dolls. But for people who are collectors, it's just another way to express themselves.

Todd McFarlane's popularity in comics in the late '80s and early '90s helped him launch McFarlane Toys. McFarlane Toys made a significant impact on the action figure industry. His company built a reputation as the gold standard for adult-oriented action figures and has expanded its business beyond "Spawn," winning licenses from Major League Baseball, "The Matrix" films and many others.

Since then, other giants of the action figure industry are manufacturing collectible figures. Some of these companies include Hasbro, Mattel and Bandai.

You can collect just about anything your heart desires. Doesn’t matter how old you are. Collecting helps people relive their childhood memories and connect themselves to a time they were happy. Some collect for the thrill of the hunt. Others collect because they know at some point, the item will be worth something. Regardless of why you or anyone else collects, be proud of your collection and continue adding to it.
